Oliver! and other things

31 July 2019 by Dominic Holmes

Hi everyone,

My apologies for the late blog update. I have been pretty busy these past couple of days but I have a free morning now, so here I am!

We had the first rehearsal for Oliver! on Monday evening and it went really well. The orchestra sounds great and the cast are really enthusiastic, so this is shaping up to be a really good production. Plus, the bass part is nice and simple so there are no complaints from me! The next rehearsal is tomorrow and that’s going to be at the Cathedral itself, so it will be good to get a feel for where we will be playing.

I also attended an MLC team meeting on Monday afternoon. Despite being very tired and in desperate need of some coffee, it was a positive and constructive meeting. I am really enjoying working for MLC and the opportunities that the organisation can provide are quite mind blowing! There are potential workshops, recording dates and performancdes with some serious heavy weight musicians in the pipeline. I will be posting more details when everything is confirmed, so watch this space!

Another aspect of my career that MLC is helping me with is becoming a grade examiner for the Rock School examination board. It is something that I’ve had at the back of my mind but never known how to go about it, but MLC have pointed me in the right direction. Working for them also adds some weight to my application, since MLC are strongly affiliated with the Rock School brand.

Last Friday I was back at the Grantham Prepatory School accompanying the children on the final day of their summer music workshop. It was an hour of some great music, and the kids did an excellent job. It was a fabulous ensemble and there were some stand out soloists, including one young man singing ‘Old Town Road’ and a pair of flautists performing a duet together. They all coped with the heat of performing live and the literal heat from outside!

Finally, I am playing at the Bustard Inn in South Rauceby this evening. It’s the first time in a couple of months because people have been away, I injured myself and I had Little Shop of Horrors at the end of June. Really looking forward to it!

Hope you all are well,
Dominic
